Exodus Peak Ski Trip

by Rich So June 1, 2009May 26, 2020

Bram skiing up to gain the bump above the glacier, originally uploaded by RichSo.

Bram and I did a one day ski ascent of Exodus Peak, a remote peak on the Pemberton Icefield with surprisingly easy access. A 10.5 hour day, gaining 1850m of elevation and covering 13km each way. A highly recommended ski trip, as the views from the summit can’t be beat.

We had a perfect day for the 2023 #chuckanut50k, o We had a perfect day for the 2023 #chuckanut50k, one of the fastest trail 50k’s around with only 1500m of vert. It was so warm and sunny, I even changed into my favourite @brooksrunningca #runhappy singlet at the last minute. My A goal as always was to run happy and stay healthy (success!), but I thought a B goal of running sub 5:15 might be possible (didn’t quite make it).

It was such a great weekend spending it with the dream team, grateful for all the volunteers and cheer squads and photographers out there. Thanks Sean for these ones. Loved the stoke level from everyone all weekend long! Congratulations to everyone who made it happen and toed the line. I even ran a “50k” PB by 32 minute from 8 years ago! (although on a more technical course).

The course is basically a winded up lollipop, with 10km on the mostly flat and fast Interurban multi-use travel, followed by a first climb up to Fragrance Lake, a tough 5km road climb up Cleator road, a nice technical run along Chuckanut Ridge, a cruise along the Lost Lake trail, leading into the final Chin-scraper climb (steep but fairly short), a long descent all the way down, and then a slog back along the Interurban.

Everything was feeling great, except I had a bit of a left arch cramping issue halfway through, probably from running a bit too hard uphill on the road. I was super happy with my nutrition strategy though - a gel every 20 minutes (stuck to this all the way to the end), electrolyte drink top-up at each aid-station, and recovery-🍎pie and cold dip to motivate me for the finish. That final flat 9km was no joke.

Next up, the @runvancanada #bmovm, less than 7 weeks from today!

Also, happy international day of happiness!

Pre- #chuckanut50k feels with the best running cre Pre- #chuckanut50k feels with the best running crew. Check out that race bib number 😍 Can you tell we are pretty excited about our little running vacation. It's mostly chill lake time with a little race in between 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️. Tomorrow is going to be awesome running with this crew of Greg, @klaberee, @avery.gottfried and Doris. Good luck to everyone racing tomorrow!

Happy pi day!!! It's no surprise that I'm a massiv Happy pi day!!! It's no surprise that I'm a massive fan of pie. This year we had a chicken pot pie, broccoli cheddar pie, and strawberry rhubarb pie 🤤 3 pies. for 1 dog, 4 humans, a perfect amount of crust.

Today was also my last running workout before #chuckanut50k this Saturday. Nothing fancy for running during race week, just a short run to stay active and relaxed. Who else is racing this weekend? Excited for my first 50k in a long time!
Happy birthday @cknudy! Surprisingly good skiing o Happy birthday @cknudy! Surprisingly good skiing on Hollyburn, and we only found the delicious kind of crust! Skiing was quite good in areas where there weren't tracks from before or in open areas. Birthday party ski with the #powderpups featuring straight-lining Chilko bear, Greg, Andie, Colin, Stan, Geena, Tom, and Ang.
Final night for the Thursday night sit ski lessons Final night for the Thursday night sit ski lessons at @grousemountain, and also the Tuesday night intermediate ski program at @cypressmtn with my two students.

We really lucked out with the weather this year, no shortage of snow and clear nights. It was definitely a banner season for #vassmagic on the slopes. Thanks to the awesome team of new and returning instructors that make this rewarding program happen 🙏 Reach out to me if you're curious about volunteering for Vancouver Adaptive Snow Sports (VASS) next year. I can tell you all about it!

Ski detail: it's an articulating bi ski, the @enablingtech Dynamic bi ski paired with the Mega III bi ski.

When I flew to Toronto last Saturday for work I wa When I flew to Toronto last Saturday for work I was a little worried I wouldn't be able to fit in my last long run before my upcoming trail race, especially since a major snowstorm just blew through on the Friday eve.

Thanks to my #runhappyteam for pointing me in the direction of the Martin Goodman Trail (aka the MGT) which runs along the waterfront, and gets plowed right away. I managed to squeeze in a long run workout wearing my @brooksrunningca Hyperion Max shoes with 2x20min tempo and a truncated 10min tempo before realizing I'd be late and rushed back to the hotel!

I also got to run with @craig.tomsett and the QSW run club. This was a big run crew that meets on Tuesday nights at the Lulu store, with runs alternating between workout and social run each week. This week was 4x1km repeats, 500m recovery around a city block, not easy dodging black ice, snow, and pedestrians 🫠 The best part was high fiving everyone at the finish.

Looking forward to be back on the trails now!

Running with with my fellow #runhappy teammates @b Running with with my fellow #runhappy teammates @bridget_bri.sustainable and @wandersofcortney for their @stridewise workout along the Toronto waterfront. Glad I had my @brooksrunningca Dash 1/2 zip and Attitude jacket and Source Tights for the breezy and cold night. Third straight run in the Hyperion Max which seems perfect for this.

I was only able to join for part of the workout (6x20 sec hills, 10min tempo, and all over again), given that I had a bit of an extra warmup running from my hotel, and then realizing I wouldn't have enough time to finish the workout and make it to a work dinner so I had to cut it short and run straight there 😅. See you next time in Vancouver for BMO!

I knew it was going to be a fun ski day when I wok I knew it was going to be a fun ski day when I woke up without power after last night's big snowstorm. 30cm in Lynn Valley, and over 50-60cm at Hollyburn mountain. Asides from a bit of parking chaos due to the big snowfall and one plow working away, it was a pretty spectacular day to enjoy a rare bluebird powder day up here, with no lineups and all the high speed quads moving 😉

Started the day with @lil.winglett but soon stumbled upon Daniel and @jonathanww who were on the same program of fun hot laps and mini golfing on convoluted supported terrain. As expected from the avy forecast, the snowpack was very reactive to human triggering, with plenty of whumpfs, shooting cracks, and size 1s with 50cm crown on convex slopes. See last photo which was near the wanded snowshoe route. Stay safe out there and enjoy the awesome north shore snow conditions right now!
Training for a hilly race? Want to get better at r Training for a hilly race? Want to get better at runnings? Here are some tips that me and my @brooksrunning #runhappy teammates put together.

1️⃣ Hill sprints up a steep incline. These should feel hard but last no longer than ten seconds. I'm lucky enough to be surrounded by hills, but if you're like @keegan_breaksaway and live somewhere flat, be creative, and use a parking garage 😆 (please watch out for cars)

2️⃣ It's totally ok to power hike. Depending on the gradient of the hill, it might even be more efficient. I love power hiking everything. Practice a mix of power hiking vs running up an incline.

3️⃣ Use a treadmill like @amanda_katzz you can use it to run a varied hill workout if there's no hill nearby, and also look up your race and determine the average distance and gradient and try to simulate that

4️⃣ But there's nothing better than just finding hills and running up them like @hldagenais. And don't forget to run happy and #findyourrun or hill!
